CHAPTER 1

Hi, my name is Heather Seib. I am a CST and full-time faculty here in the surgical technology program with Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis. Today, I am going to show you a setup for a C-section.

CHAPTER 2

Okay, so to start off, we are going to set our drapes off to the side here. I'm going to put a towel down over here to put under our bowl that we are going to take for fluid. This Alexis retractor, it is a self-retaining retractor and I'm gonna put that up on my Mayo stand to be ready. Along with my suction tubing and my Bovie. I am also going to put my Bovie scratch pad up there so it is ready to go. Get our blades. into our sharps container. I have here gowns for the surgeon and any assistants along with a towel. Put the surgeon's gloves on bottom, then their gown. Their towel will be first to dry off their hands after they come in from scrubbing.

CHAPTER 3

Make myself a towel roll. Then, I normally just tuck my stringer under my pan there and then organize my pan. Put that towel there to keep my knives on. When I organize my forceps, I'm going to put my smooth forceps on the left and my forceps with teeth over here on the right side of my pan.

CHAPTER 4

Up on my Mayo stand in this small bowl, I'm going to put this little bowl with the bulb syringe to clear out baby's nose and mouth, their little hat that they get, and umbilical clamps. So we'll have that ready to go for once baby's delivered. This here is an abdominal dressing and a Telfa. Those are gonna be our dressings at the end of the case. And in this bowl, we're gonna get normal saline. Make sure as soon as it's poured, you are labeling it appropriately.

CHAPTER 5

Now we are ready to do our count. I'm gonna start with laps. When you are counting laps, make sure to pull on that string to check the integrity. Make sure none of them are loose. We have one, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five, for 10. I have one Bovie tip, one Bovie scratch pad. Blades, I have one, two, three. Suture, I have one, two. Now we can do instruments. When I count instruments, I like to take an empty knife handle and use it as a pointer to make it easier for my circulator. So mosquitoes, one, two, three, four. Criles, one, two, three, four. Kellys, one, two, three, four. Peans, one, two. Tonsils, one, two. Allis, one, two, three, four. Babcock, one, two. Kocher, one, two. Right angle, one, two. Foerster ring forcep, one, two. Needle drivers, one, two, three. Scissors, one, two, three, four. Penetrating towel clamps, one, two, three, four. Knife handles, I have one, two, three, and four. Yankauer, I have one. Retractors, I have Weitlaner, one; ribbon retractor, one; Deaver, one; bladder blade, one; Richardsons one, two; Army-Navy, one, two. Forceps, I have Ferris-Smith, one; rat tooth, one; Adson with teeth, one, two; smooth Adson, one, two; tissue forcep, one; Russian, one, two; DeBakey, one.

CHAPTER 6

And now we will finish getting our Mayo set up. I'm gonna take my Yankauer and connect it to my suction tubing so that's ready to go.

CHAPTER 7

I'm also going to get my blade loaded. I like to get a blade loaded as soon as possible so that if things turn into an emergency, we have one ready to go. So I'm going to load a number 20 blade on my four knife handle for skin. And then a number 10 on my three knife handle for the uterus.

CHAPTER 8

And then, penetrating towel clamps. I like to just clamp them together, put them with the rest of my drapes. Over here. Those are ready to go. And then up on my Mayo, I'm gonna put two mosquitoes just for any hemostasis. I am going to put an Allis. The Allis is gonna be used to check and pinch mom's abdomen to make sure anesthesia is working appropriately. Grab a couple of Kocher clamps to hold fascia as well as a Foerster ring forcep that will be used in case there are any pieces of the placenta that have not come out. And I also wanna put a pair of curved Mayos up there for any dissection that they may need to use. And then, you are ready to begin your case.
